Laser vision Correction is the method of using a cool gentle beam to reshape the cornea to eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contacts. There are two common forms of laser vision correction, lasik and PRK. Lasik (Laser-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is the most common method of laser vision correction procedures to date. The second most common procedure is PRK (Photo-Refractive Keratectomy). Most physicians will use Lasik to correct nearly all prescriptions from mild, moderate to severe forms of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Since 1998, Lasik has become the method of choice for most physicians. It has become one of the most common elective procedures with over 1,000,000 million prescriptions treated in 2001.
The lasik eye surgery procedure requires that a thin flap created by a device called a microkeratome be created on the surface of the cornea, which is lifted by the physician. The exposed cornea is treated with a cool gentle beam from the Excimer Laser. Once the laser is applied, the physician places the flap back down and provides the patient with the proper post-procedure instructions.
